The Hinsdale House

Perched on a quiet stretch of Benner Road in Bristol, right on the border with Damariscotta, the Hinsdale House dates back to 1820, the year Maine was officially incorporated into the United States. The storied history of the property has been carefully preserved: from the original hearth to the exposed wood beams that bear the marks of the original hand tools used to shape them. Meanwhile, the former barn has been converted into a high-raftered living room and the backyard “patio” is made from large stones dragged centuries ago from the depths of the local quarry. 

Currently owned by a writer and a museum curator, the Hinsdale House is amply decorated with folk art and paintings sourced from across New England. But there are plenty of contemporary touches, too, including high-speed internet access, a modern kitchen, and a smart TV. Downstairs, the master bedroom opens into an en suite bathroom; on the opposite side of the bathroom is a second bedroom with two twin beds. Upstairs is a cozy third bedroom (with a queen bed and crib) and a bathroom with a claw foot tub. The second floor includes a renovated playroom for children, along with a trio of additional beds –– perfect for group sleepovers. 

The Hinsdale House is ideally placed: It’s a 4 minute drive to Biscay Pond, a 10 minute drive to downtown Damariscotta, and an 18 drive to Pemaquid Beach and the Pemaquid Point lighthouse.
